Amsterdam

The ´Amsterdam´ that most people know is the city centre, the semicircle with Central Station at its centre. It corresponds to the old city, as it was around 1850. Many people choose to visit Amsterdam because of its reputation for tolerance, although part of this reputation is attributable to cultural misunderstandings. Depending on your viewpoint some people will consider Amsterdam an unwholesome city whereas other people will find their relaxed attitudes refreshing. Amsterdam is not generally seen as a family destination, but if you avoid the red light district, it is no more objectionable for children than any large city.

Basel means art. Visiting Basel can be a holiday for your vocal cords if you plan to absorb the beautiful art in silence exhibited in the many first–rate museums. Once a year it also hosts ArtBasel which is the world's premier fair for modern classics and contemporary art. Of late Basel has become known as the Manchester of Switzerland, this is due to several comparisons with the UK City. This includes, amongst others, the weather, the multi–cultural make–up, the wide variety of shopping and eating establishments and the surrounding geography.

The distinctive flavour to the city of Cologne is often put down to the inhabitants, or Kölsche, who take an enormous amount of pride in their city. Cologne, like most areas of Germany, has its very own local dialect of German, though this is unlikely to hinder the average sight–seeing tourist, as many of the landmarks of the city have English–speaking guides and information. For those tourists who speak German, and wish to practice it, the citizens have a lot of patience with those getting to grips with the grammatically difficult language. Colognians are a very friendly people; welcoming tourists of all types and with all interests.

Lausanne. the capital of the Swiss canton of Vaud, is a medium sized city (around two thirds the size of Geneva) which sits at the northern most point of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). The city is the host to the International Olympic Committee and two major universities. It is also the transportation hub of Vaud, and a gateway to the alpine Canton of the Valais, home to some of the best known ski slopes in the world.

Paris

Paris is the cosmopolitan capital of France and – with 2.2 million people living in the centre and another 9.9 million people in the suburbs (la banlieue) – is one of the largest cities in Europe. Located in the north of the country on the river Seine, Paris has the reputation of being the most beautiful and romantic of all cities, brimming with historical associations and remaining vastly influential in the realms of culture, art, fashion, food and design. Dubbed the City of Light, it is the most popular tourist destination in the world.

The city was known for having the world's largest harbour, but lost the title in 2004 to Shanghai. It is the second largest city in The Netherlands after Amsterdam, which lies approximately 50 miles (80 kilometres) to the north. The city´s street scenery is characterized by the large presence of people from North Africa, Turkey and the former Dutch colonies of Suriname, The Netherlands Antilles and Indonesia. The people tend to live together harmoniously, despite recent tensions between the native Dutch and Muslim population in The Netherlands.

France might have the real Magic Kingdom, but the true Disneyland of Europe belongs to the Swiss. Switzerland is a natural theme park showcasing three of Europe's most distinct cultures. To the northeast is the beer-drinking, sausage–eating German–speaking Switzerland which is hard to tell from neighboring Swabia (Germany); to the south–west the wine drinking and shopping spills effortlessly into France; in the south–east the sun warms cappuccino-sippers loitering in Italian–style plazas; and in the center: classic Swiss flugelhorns and mountain landscapes. Binding it all together is a distinc Swiss mentality.
